Dr. Rachel Hughes

Dr. Rachel Hughes is a veterinarian and co-owner of Bluenose Animal Hospital. She was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Dr. Rachel graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2018 and has since worked on the beautiful South Shore of Nova Scotia. She has a strong focus in small animal internal medicine and general surgery. In her free time, Dr. Rachel is an avid pickleball player, enjoys working on her hobby beef farm with her partner Chance and their dog (Aspen), 4 cats (Figaro, Kovu, Mattie and Cleo) and rabbit (Clover)

Dr. Kara Wilson

Dr. Kara Wilson is a veterinarian and co-owner of Bluenose Animal Hospital. Dr. Kara graduated from Dalhousie University with a BSc in 2014 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2017. After graduation she completed an intensive internship in Vermont and then settled into practice in her home province of Nova Scotia. It is here that she discovered her passion for small animal dentistry. Having completed many additional hours of study to fuel her special interest, she is thrilled to bring these skills to her local community. Other interests include: dermatology, pain management and senior pet care. Outside of work you can find her adventuring with her husband Jeremy, riding her horse Kolumb or cuddling her two dogs Belle and Valentino.

MaKenna, RVT

Makenna is a dedicated Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) who brings a wealth of expertise and a passion for animal care to Bluenose Animal Hospital. Graduating with honors from the Veterinary Technology program at Maritime Business College (MBC) in 2019, MaKenna has built a distinguished career which she looks forward to building here at Bluenose Animal Hospital.

In her role as an RVT, MaKenna has special interest in dentistry and anesthesia. She demonstrates a meticulous approach to dental care and proficiency in anesthesia, ensuring that every pet receives the highest level of comfort and treatment. Her hands-on experience has equipped her with the skills necessary to handle veterinary cases with both technical precision and compassionate care.

Outside of her professional responsibilities, MaKenna is a proud owner of a Golden Retriever named Gus, who brings joy and inspiration into her life. Additionally, MaKenna and her partner, Connor, dedicate their spare time to volunteering as soccer coaches. Together, they foster teamwork and sportsmanship in young athletes, contributing positively to their community.

Breanna, RVT

Breanna was born and raised right here on the South Shore and she always knew she would have a career caring for animals. She completed her education in veterinary technology at Maritime Business College in Dartmouth, where she graduated with
honors. With over nine years of experience as an RVT, Breanna has developed a comprehensive skill set in common household pets and is certified in exotics!

In addition to her professional achievements; Breanna is passionate about breeding and competing in dog sports with her 6 purebred Australian Shepherds she shares with her partner, Larry. She competes in conformation, obedience, rally obedience, agility, scent detection, disc and sprinter with her pack!
This personal interest not only highlights her deep commitment to the breed but also underscores her hands-on experience with canine health and behavior

Sydney, RVT

Sydney earned her diploma in veterinary technology from Dalhousie’s Agricultural Campus and has been a dedicated professional in the field since 2017. She brings a wealth of experience with a particular focus on dentistry and anesthesia. Her devotion is evident in her approach to patient care, anesthetic procedures and dental prophylaxis.

Originally from Pinegrove, NS, Sydney grew up in a close-knit community surrounded by family and friends. She now resides in Upper Branch, where she manages a farm with her husband and their two children. The family’s home is also shared with five energetic border collies, adding a lively and joyful atmosphere.

Courtney, RVT

Courtney was born and raised in Maitland, Nova Scotia and is a seasoned Registered Veterinary Technician with over 15 years of experience. Courtney combines her extensive knowledge and hands-on expertise to provide exceptional care for her animal patients. She has a passion for laboratory diagnostics and animal behavior.

She earned her diploma with Honours from Nova Scotia Agricultural College in 2009, laying a strong foundation for her career in veterinary technology. She also attended Acadia University and Memorial University of Newfoundland studying Psychology and Sociology.

Outside of her professional life, Courtney is passionate about competitive dog sports. She actively participates in agility, flyball, rally obedience, sprinter, tricks, conformation and disc with her four Shetland Sheepdogs and Mudi. In addition, she channels her creativity into epoxy resin design, crafting custom dog collar and crate tags for fellow dog enthusiasts.

Courtney and her fiance, Kalip enjoy a shared love for animals and often spend their free time travelling, hiking and competing with their five dogs.

Her dedication to both her profession and her personal interests reflects her commitment to enhancing the well-being of animals and the vibrant community of dog lovers

Jodie, RVT

Jodie is a dedicated and experienced Registered Veterinary Technician with over 24 years in the field. Born and raised in Lunenburg County, she resides on her family farm in Northwest, Jodie has deep roots in her local community and has committed her life to the care and well-being of animals large and small.

Jodie attended and graduated from Park View Education Centre (PVEC). She furthered her studies at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) for a year, honing her skills and expanding her knowledge in animal care.
Throughout her extensive career, Jodie has developed a profound passion for the human-animal bond. She believes strongly in the positive impact that animals have on mental health, a conviction that drives her dedication to her work. Her personal life reflects this commitment; she shares her home with three beloved dogs and three cherished cats. When she’s not working, Jodie enjoys spending time outdoors with her animals, a testament to her love for both her professional and personal companions.

In addition to her work with animals, Jodie treasures the time she spends with her three nieces, adding a joyful family dimension to her life.

Meaghan, CSR

Originally from the South Shore, Meaghan has accumulated over a decade of experience in human healthcare and she is excited to bring her skills and dedication to the role of Customer Service Representative at Bluenose Animal Hospital. Her extensive background in healthcare has honed her ability to provide compassionate, organized, and respectful service to clients and their cherished pets. She is dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for both clients and their four-legged family members.

When not at work, Meaghan enjoys spending quality time at home with her boyfriend Zach and their rescue, Aminah, their corgi, Loaf, and their two cats, Bentley and Salem. Her hobbies include going for walks, sea glass hunting, and gaming, which help her unwind and stay balanced. Meaghan is enthusiastic about contributing to the Bluenose Animal Hospital team and supporting the well-being of both pets and their owners
